Being a long time fan of Anya Seton’s Katherine I was pleased to learn of Mistress of the Monarchy. After reading the reviews I was skeptical but went ahead and ordered it. I experienced such a range of emotions while reading (spoiler alert): initially I was disillusioned and disappointed to realize how fictional Anya Seton’s account of Katherine was but as I continued reading Mistress of the Monarchy I was increasingly appreciative to learn what was fact. One reviewer was critical of the many “could have been, might have, perhaps...” statements but for me that only lends credibility to the authors integrity. She was being clear as to what was fact and what was conjecture. While this book reads more like a history book than a novel it’s a good companion to Katherine if you want to distinguish between fact and fiction. In the end I was fascinated and so glad I read it.
